More Information on Using the Audits
The Best Practice Self-Audits is a tool to assess your own practices as they compare to those found in high performing districts, schools and classrooms. Each area (box) of the Framework links to a survey of that particular practice area with questions based upon specific evidence of what these practices look like when being conducted at a high performing level.
Most schools have practices in place that fit into the framework, however, when closely analyzed these practices often do not have the same level of clarity, specificity, alignment and coherence of those same practices documented in high performing schools. It is this difference of fidelity that provides insights to schools and school districts about how to continuously improve their own practices to reach higher levels of academic achievement.
You can take the audits on your own. However, the most effect application of this tool is when a group of educators take the audits and aggregate their results. This provides a full picture of the level of implementation, understanding and agreement on how far along your district, school and classrooms are in implementing these best practices. It is also instructive to review where there is disagreement about the progress to date. All of this information, combined with your student achievement data, will assist you in identifying areas of success and targeting specific practices needing improvement.
The audits are also an excellent planning tool to use when visiting other schools that are achieving higher levels of performance. Your audit report can help focus a site visit on specific practices for which you can collect artifacts, evidence and new insights from peers at other schools that are farther along in implementing those practices with measurable results.
To take the audits as a group, one person (usually the principal) registers as a Facilitator. This person has access to the full reports of all audits results. The answers are anonymous other than the level of the system in which the person performs their work (i.e., teacher, administrator). The facilitator creates a group access code that is shared with others to register to take the audits as part of the group.
